Rituals Before A Nightout

If there's one arena where South Asians truly shine, it's in the realm of home remedies and jugaads (involving the use of skill and imagination to find an easy solution to a problem using cheap, basic means). This resourcefulness extends seamlessly into the realm of pre-game routines, where some individuals embrace heirloom ideologies, relying on tried-and-tested jugaads to navigate the unpredictable terrain of a night out, while others stumble upon rituals as they explore the vibrant tapestry of the night itself.

In our quest to unravel the diverse pre-game rituals of South Asian youth, we engaged in conversations with a myriad of individuals. Their insights and practices not only showcase the rich tapestry of traditions woven into their routines but also highlight the dynamic and evolving nature of South Asian cultural expressions.

"You bet I'm setting the vibe right! Incense burning (or if I can’t find one I usually light a candle) while doing my make-up, classic Bollywood beats playing—bringing the whole 'back home' feel to my room. It's like my personal party warm-up, my prep to have a great time." -Revati, 20

"Haldi and gram flour magic! There's nothing like a natural mask session before the dance floor drama. It's not just about the moves; it's about glowing while letting the hands do the talking. Pre-game beauty is my kind of art!"

"Pre-drinks, baby! No compromise. We gather at a mate's place, throw back some drinks, and gear up for the night. It's an easy way out of an otherwise expensive night. Have you seen the prices on the club drinks here?" -Shreyas, 21

"Playlist check is a must. Got my Bollywood beats and the latest hits lined up. While everyone is busy with alcohol I am the one who saves the night with my playlist during pre-game " -Roycen, 23

"Antique earrings FTW! Wearing my mom's jewelry brings a touch of tradition. It's like carrying a slice of my roots to the dance floor. Plus, they look fabulous with my party wardrobe!" -Kanika, 28

"Rose water to the rescue! Quick spritz for a skin refresh, and the scent? Pure nostalgia. It's my desi skincare magic. I use it instead of the usual toners, half the price and double the benefits, it’s something I learnt seeing my mum getting ready." -Sanya, 23

"Chai for the win! My night out ritual involves prepping for a cup of strong chai before leaving. It's not just a beverage; it's a great hangover cure, at least for me! And now that I am no more in my 20s, I desperately need it" -Vikram, 33

“For me, it definitely has to be oiling up 2 hours before stepping into shower. A good oil session and a dash of hydration make sure I'm not just dancing; I'm slaying on the dance floor. It's about looking fabulous while creating great memories." -Mihika, 29
